So you would like to do something to help, but are busy and are not sure what you can do?
Well here are the details of some of the roles for you to consider:
Home checker: Can you spare an hour here and there? Could you go out to new adopters' homes and talk about cats?
Home checking / visiting is a vital role; it enables us to answer questions and provide information to new would-be adopters. We provide full training for this role and an adoption pack for potential new owners. You do not need to be a cat expert, all you need is common sense, transport and a little diplomacy.
12 Week Follow up Home Checks: Can you spare 15 to 30 minutes? Do you fancy visiting an adopted cat/ kitten and having a cup of tea and a chat? Sounds easy, well it is! You will be given the details of the adopter and the cat; you ring or email them for a date and time that is convenient for you both. When you visit them you see their cat and make sure that it has been vaccinated and neutered if appropriate and that there are no problems. We always ask for feedback from the adopter on the 12 week check, this is to enable us to improve on any areas possible.
Fosterer: One of the hardest, most demanding but ultimately most rewarding roles. Do you like the sound of having different kittens or cats to look after every few weeks? Could you love, cuddle, feed and clean a cat and then give it up to a homechecked new owner? Do you have a spare room in your home that is not being used or garden large enough to put up a dedicated cat pen (6 x 4ft minimum)?
If the answer is yes then why not foster for us? You will be given full training and have 24 hour support from our cat Welfare officer, all questions will be answered and all equipment will be provided.
Transporters: So you have a car and some free time but fostering is a bit too much, you are not keen on the idea of home checking. Why not be one of our transporters? It involves delivering supplies (food, cat litter, toys and paperwork) from our Homing Officer to the fosterers and other volunteers. Also collecting cats from our fosterers, taking them to the vets for treatment or dropping them off and collecting them for neutering.
Fundraising: How about collecting with us for a few hours outside a supermarket or shopping centre? All street collection licences are applied for and paperwork done in advance. All that is required is: standing at the venue, smiling and holding a collection tin and you get to meet some lovely people.
Experienced Fundraisers: Do you come from / work in a fundraising environment? Do you have ideas or experience in this area? Could you head up a project if we supply all the volunteers? If you work would your company consider sponsoring us?
Publicity: Are you a budding writer, media student or photographer? Do you work in the Media and could offer us an hour here or there to write an article? Are you in the public eye and feel you can do something to help?
Profiles and articles in newspapers, magazines, public places, notice boards and company intranets plus interviews on the radio are very important to any organisation. Ultimately, the more people that know about us the more chance we have of homing our cats and kittens.
Every week we have different cats and kittens coming into our care. It is important for the cat / kitten that each picture tells a story.
Marketing / Sourcing: So you are a dab hand at getting something free? Striking a good deal? On the phone or via email or post you are a star? Could you get companies to donate prizes for raffles, supplies and get paying companies to attend Summer and Christmas Fayres? If so we need you.
Maintenance, Electrics and Handy persons: Can you erect a shed? Are you qualified to wire up some lights and plug sockets? How about fencing, decking, ring beam bases, cladding, insulation and laying Vinyl? Do you have suppliers / contacts we can utilise?
We welcome fresh ideas and input, we like to try new things and we enjoy working with like-minded inividuals. We are a mixed group of volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life. We are a friendly, social bunch with no hidden agendas, no committee clique or head office directives, just a desire to help all the cats and kittens that we can.
Our motto is “Working together to give cats a second chance”
